The Qbit Labs Pvt. Ltd. corporate office is a 5000 sq.ft space where our brief was to create a modern and lively, yet calm environment for a young team. The founders were very clear that they wanted to create a workplace that reflected cultural values like co-operation, transparency and dedication, and while also responding to the needs and preferences of their teams. The rest, they left up to us.

The Challenge: Our primary user group was a team of young engineers that specialise in quantum computing, and inherently work long hours. They needed a welcoming space that they enjoyed coming to every morning, and one which fostered productivity. But how do you do this for someone who has a desk job, with very little opportunity to spend time outdoors?

The Options: Option 1 - Create a workspace that is a physical embodiment of quantum computing, an artistic rendition of a serious and complex subject matter. This would mean using deep blues, grey and blacks, highlighted with metal trims, glass and metal furniture, and a focus on artificial lighting; or Option 2 - Create a workspace that is removed from the industry that its teams work in, and focusses instead on creating the right environment to foster productivity and positivity. We chose option 2.

The Solution: Several studies have proven that spending time/ being surrounded by nature, has a direct correlation to our productivity and mood. Closed, indoor offices, no matter how swanky, are always disconnected from the outdoors, and do not give people a chance to "breathe". So we designed a workspace that used an industrial theme (an aesthetic preferred by young engineers today), but infused it with natural light and earthy tones to create a softer, more vibrant and fresh setting.

The layout is also designed to give people the best of both worlds: privacy (private and dedicated workstations) for focussed work and flexibility to personalise “your space”, as well as space for collaboration and blowing off steam (break-out spaces): The office has an open floor plan, flanked by semi-private spaces like conference and meeting rooms, cabins for team-leads and the founders, and an in-house cafe.

The Qbit office also capitalises on large glass facade walls that came with the bare shell, to keep the team connected to the outdoors as much as possible.

The Result: People no longer loose sense of the time of day while they work, they  always have a view, and can enjoy a cup of chai by the window when it rains.
