What is a BLDC Motor Fan?

What is the technology behind a BLDC fan?

Normal fans are powered by electromagnets that run on induction motors. Such a system requires brushes and commutators in its assembly, making it more susceptible to friction, mechanical losses and noise.

 

On the other hand, Brushless Direct Current or BLDC fans use permanent magnets powered by a direct current (DC) motor. This eliminates the need for brushes and commutators resulting in minimum mechanical energy losses, which in turn makes the system use the same energy more efficiently.

 

In other words, BLDC fans use the same electrical energy more efficiently than traditional fans.



Pros of Using BLDC Motor Fans


a) Energy Efficiency:

As we just saw, BLDC motor fans are inherently more energy-efficient than their brushed counterparts, offering significant savings in electricity consumption. Depending on the models being compared, BLDC fans can be 40 – 60% more efficient than their conventional counterparts as the elimination of brushes reduces friction, minimises energy losses and improves overall efficiency. For example, while a regular ceiling fan uses about 75W of power, BLDC fans only consume between 30W and 40W depending on the make and model chosen.


b) Durability or Extended Lifespan:

With fewer moving parts, i.e., without brushes and commutators that can wear out over time, BLDC motor fans boast a longer lifespan when compared to traditional fans. The absence of brushes eliminates common points of failure and produces less heat, thus enhancing the reliability and reducing the maintenance costs of the fan.


c) Variable Speed Control:

Regular fans use capacitive resistance to change the amount of current flowing into the induction motor, hence adjusting the speed of the fan. In other words, you rotate the regulator to alter the resistance, thus changing the speed of the fan. Over time this mechanism undergoes some wear and tear, and becomes less accurate or needs replacement.

BLDC motor fans on the other hand control speed by controlling the amount of current that flows into the DC motor through electronic commutation. This is done via a remote control, and is far more precise than adjusting capacitive resistance. This accuracy enables optimized performance through energy savings, and caters to more specific speed requirements hence improving comfort.

In India, the prices of BLDC fans start at about Rs. 2,500 and can go up to Rs. 10,000 depending on the size and combination of features (as compared to regular fans which you can get for about Rs. 1,500). However, the benefits of energy savings, longevity, enhanced performance, and reliability often justify the initial investment over time.


b) Complexity:

The electronic control and commutation system of BLDC motor fans require specialized knowledge and expertise for installation, operation, and maintenance. Integrating these advanced systems may pose challenges for users unfamiliar with the technology, necessitating professional assistance for optimal performance.
